Question about screenwriting?

Hi, I'm really interested in becoming a screenwriter, and I was wondering, do I just finish the script and then send it off, or should I ask an agency whether they're looking for a project.. or what? Sorry if I sound really amateur. My whole life, I've been wanting to work in front of the camera, so I'm new to the "behind the scenes" stuff :]
