Kitty Cooties- What could this be?

My 4 yr old cat loves to sleep with me, he HAS to have his head on my arm, like he's cuddling and I love him, but lately he's been shaking his head a lot, and flicking wet stuff on me, ew! I'm thinking its either slobber or from his ears??? He usually scratches before he does the head shake thing. I've checked his mouth I'm more leaning toward his ears rather than slobber, could he have earmites?? What do they look like and could this be the problem???
