He's only known me for a day and wants me to be his girlfriend?

Some kid I know through some friends added me yesterday on Facebook. I decided I'd approve his request since we had a generous amount of mutual friends. Rumor has it he's had his eye on me for awhile, and one of his friends (who is also friends with me) pushed him into adding me. He started commenting my pictures and messaging me with romantic things. I was flattered, but at the same time kind of baffled. Not knowing this kid and receiving this kind of attention was completely awkward, yet on his part also unwarranted. But I wasn't going to kick him to the curb, I gave him my attention. We exchanged numbers because he said "I'm not ever online" so I thought it'd be more convenient anyway since I'm not on that much either. And now he's talking about how he wants to date me, and explains how many girls broke his heart and how nobody wants him because he's not desirable and he's too much of a pushover. He wants to hang out, but I'm sure it'd be best if I had a friend with me. But do you think this is weird? Is he receiving the wrong message, or just being too persistent?
