What would cause a brown substance, that is abrasive to the touch,to grow on the stalk of a leather coral?

is it falling apart when you do so and does it stink, seriously smell your finger and if it smells like rotting coral then the coral is dying. 3 possible reasons. 1 mana shrimp, how you check for that is when the lights are off listen for a clicking noise if you have one you need to set a trap to catch it, dont touch it though that big claw is what cuts through coral with ease. 2 Worms nasty buggers erfly eats them but then when you notice the erfly picking at your corals you gotta take him out. 3 test your water, make sure its all the proper readings, and how do you add your new salt water? through the top or sump if through top could be coral burn from salt that didnt mix. Other than that if its not falling apart it could just be getting ready to shed no harm if its just shedding try helping it with a powerhead aimed that way. Dad has been in the biz over 30 years i have been playing with saltwater since i was 6 still always learning something new
